![]() ![]() "All my past visits to any dentist have been filled with anxiety, dread, and overall fear. First off, the entire staff at The Dentistry was confident, pleasant, and gave me a most comfortable feeling. The doctors were truly professional and compassionate. Their procedures were perfectly orchestrated and the most relaxing and totally pain free process I had ever experienced. I don't know why I didn't call sooner. They can expect a life-time (coward) patient. Thank you all." - Steve K. |
Intravenous sedation, or gental anesthesia is the best sedation option for those with high levels of fear and anxiety. For most adults, nitrous oxide and oral sedative options are plenty to calm several levels of nervousness or distress. However, there are extreme cases or extenuating circumstances in which gentle anesthesia or IV sedation is the best option.
Patients with special needs, extreme cases of dental fear and anxiety, or those undergoing complex procedures like wisdom tooth extraction or oral surgery are candidates for IV sedation.
Dental anesthesia is no different than the gental anesthesia given for major surgeries at the hospital. Intravenous sedation renders the patient completely unconscious and totally unable to feel pain.
A board certified anesthesiologist will administer the IV sedation. Administration is normally done with a combination of an intravenous injection in the hand or arm, and a face mask. You will discuss the specific details of your dental sedation with your dentist before your appointment. Patients are required to fast, or go without eating, for several hours before receiving gental anesthesia.
Often, using dental anesthesia can help with post-operative pain as well. Continuing to keep your body relaxed and unresponsive to pain for several hours after your oral surgery, it will allow you to get home and take reliable painkillers to help manage your recovery.
Patients receiving dental sedation will need an escort to drive them home from their surgery. Patients are sent home from the office soon after their appointments and are typically feeling back to normal by the next day.
